Cold Weather Wear
Preparing for work in cooler temperatures is important as it allows us to continue working while staying as warm as possible.
Dressing in layers is the best way to stay warm during wintry weather. The purpose is to retain body heat and stay dry.
Layers should be loose to leave room for air pockets to lock in heat. Layers that are too think do not trap your body’s heat. Clothing should be light weight and give you freedom of movement needed for work. Layers should consist of a layer against the body to help wick the moisture away, then a layer of insulating clothing, and finally a layer of wind or water proof clothing. Dressing in layers allows you to remove clothing as needed due to
temperature changes. Don’t forget to cover your head. Ninety percent (90%) of your body heat can be lost through your head if it is not properly covered. Remember only approved cold weather liners can be worn with a hard hat. Last of all take care of your feet. Insulating socks are great but if your feet sweat they are going to get cold. Wet, cold feet can make you feel cold all over.
What we eat and drink is important also. Consume hot and easily digestible food such as soup, noodles and rice. Drink beverages like hot milk or warm water. Your body burns more calories during cold weather trying to keep itself warm. Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages. They accelerate the loss of body heat because they dilate blood vessels.
